For those who might be new to the GUS updates, always check epas first or Gravis BBS since this many time answers the question what drivers are current. I noticed that 3.59 was re-uploaded to epas submit recently, I suppose someone requested it who didn't get it earlier ( I was originally posted sometime in Jan 95 I think), I also noted that release 4.11 has been posted on epas. It was readily apparant to me from the .txt file if this was for MAX only, so I got it and found out it is for all GUS boards, including MAX, etc as listed in the .txt file. Anyway the drivers installed beautifully from Win95 DOS (hit F8 and select command prompt only), and they sound great too. But back to the original question, about whether Megaem in 3.59 is the new Protected mode Megaem. No, and it's not included with 4.11 either. You'll have to download megaem303.zip from epas. I just looked and it's still there. MEGA-EM VERSION 3.03b (BETA) - 03/17/95 As to the rumours of soundblaster emulation in Mega-em303, heres some text from epas mega303b.txt file: VERSION 3.03b (Beta) * First release of the all-new, rewritten Mega-Em. Emulates Roland Sound Canvas/General MIDI/MT-32, Sound Blaster and UltraMID. Improvements over older (2.xx) versions of Mega-Em include compatibility with most protected mode software, interactive setup, single executable, better sounding patch set, faster loading time, allows UltraSound software to run at the same time as Mega-Em, automatic reloading of patch set when necessary, automatically unloads when Windows is run and automatically takes advantage of extra hardware (the 16 bit record/playback CODEC) on the UltraSound MAX. Sound Blaster music (FM) support is not included. Note- FM support is NOT included, believe it! It still provides SB DAC support mono, just like it always has. ------------------------------ From: Ted Ching Date: Tue, 9 May 1995 15:19:38 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Everyone with MK2 problems 1) For those if you who expereince slowdowns when playing MK2 with a GUS, let me say that is NOT because of the GUS. MK2 slows down just as much when using a the SCC-1 & SB combo. If your system is less than a 486/66, it will slow down when playing music. (read #5 to get mk2 to run faster) 2) You need at least 5 megabytes free for MK2 to run w/o accessing the HDD for the digital samples. If you only have 4, i suggest you use load a disk cache of about 256k. Or turn the sound effects off. 3) Do NOT use QEMM or EMM386 for MK2. It doesn't need it. In fact, you shouldn't use these memory managers for *ANY* game that uses DOS4GW. You should use only use Himem.sys Everyone should know this by now. 4) Make sure you have at least 530k free of conventional memory. It will run extrordinary slow if you don't. If you have a disk compression software running (Stacker,Doublspace), and use a GUS with MK2, you'll have less than 500k free. Solution: remove the disk compression software. 5) ** TO MAKE MK2 RUN FASTER ** For some reason, some stages run faster than others. The fastest running stage by far the The Pit 2. You can enter a code to let you play on that stage all the time. Here it is: when the programming credits appear when you start the game, type "AICULEDSSUL". You should hear a chime if you did it correctly. Then you can press F9 to enter the cheaters' menu and select "Cheat on" and "Stage to Pit 2" Hope that helps... ------------------------------ From: Frank Wang Date: Tue, 9 May 1995 18:26:57 -0400 Subject: Monkey island 2 patch list on request # Title: Monkey island 2 Gravis Patch file # Purpose: Be really annoying and bug Gravis a lot about needing this kind # of thing, and/or a Megaem that can make this kind of thing # Note : you'll probably have to change the patch directories # Send all thanks to: fwang@sbcs.sunysb.edu [Ultrasound] PatchDir=D:\GUS\midi\ [Melodic Bank 0] PatchDir=D:\GUS\midi\ 0=acpiano 3=honky 6=hrpschrd 16=homeorg 17=percorg 19=church 20=reedorg [Drum Bank 0] PatchDir=D:\GUS\midi\ 27=highq 30=scratch2 32=sqrclick 35=kick1 36=kick2 37=stickrim 38=snare1 39=claps 40=snare2 41=tomlo2 42=hihatcl 43=tomlo1 44=hihatpd 45=tommid2 46=hihatop 47=tommid1 48=tomhi2 49=cymcrsh1 50=tomhi1 51=cymride1 60=bongohi 61=bongolo 62=congahi1 63=congahi2 64=congalo 65=timbaleh 66=timbalel 70=maracas 75=clave [Melodic Patches] 0=acpiano 3=honky 6=hrpschrd 16=homeorg 17=percorg 19=church 20=reedorg [Drum Patches] 27=highq 30=scratch2 32=sqrclick 35=kick1 36=kick2 37=stickrim 38=snare1 39=claps 40=snare2 41=tomlo2 42=hihatcl 43=tomlo1 44=hihatpd 45=tommid2 46=hihatop 47=tommid1 48=tomhi2 49=cymcrsh1 50=tomhi1 51=cymride1 60=bongohi 61=bongolo 62=congahi1 63=congahi2 64=congalo 65=timbaleh 66=timbalel 70=maracas 75=clave ------------------------------ From: Mike Batchelor Date: Tue, 9 May 1995 21:13:55 -0400 (EDT) Subject: GUS and InVision videoconferencing apps >From the "Thought you might like to know" department: I just returned from a video conferencing demonstration and seminar, and one of the vendors represented was InVision. Their product is a software solution to LAN-based packet video that runs under MS Windows. The idea is that their software will work with off-the-shelf video and audio components that meet the requirements their system specifies. One of those requirements is full-duplex audio. They support two vendors right now: Advanced Gravis, and VocalTec. The reason, obviously, is that their low-cost entry level system wants to support low-cost audio boards that can record and playback simultaneously. The Sound Blaster doesn't cut it. They'll add support for more audio and video capture boards in future releases. Creative Labs also showed their offering, based on a Video Blaster and SB audio. It doesn't do full-duplex audio. You can interrupt someone, but when you speak, you can't hear them, and vice versa. But theirs works over regular voice lines, using a synchronous modem supplied with the kit, which is actually a pretty neat trick. - -- %%%%%%% Mike Batchelor %%%%%%%% http://www.clark.net/pub/mikebat/www/ %%%%%%%% "The avalanche has already begun. Never noticed anything about a cursor problem. ------------------------------ From: Greg Date: Tue, 09 May 1995 23:43:01 EDT Subject: Terminal Velocity: Blame Gravis The fact that Terminal Velocity does not support the GUS is not the fault of 3D Realms and Apogee. The game uses a digital mixing technique and uses the standard Digpak driver. Gravis wrote the GUS Digpak driver to work in conjunction with Ultramid. Games such as Return to Zork and US Navy Fighter use these drivers and all work with the GUS in "native" mode. 3DRealms uses version 3.4 of the Digpak driver, while the Gravis driver is only version 3.2. Thus this is why TV does not support the GUS. BY copying the GUS Digpak driver to the TV directory and by running Ultramid, the TV installation program will recognize the GUS and allow it to be chosen as an option. Furthermore, the test sound option in the installation program also works with the GUS and sound can be heared. However, when TV is run using the 3.2 drivers, the game hangs before startup. I have emailed Gravis about an update to these drivers but have not yet sent a response. ------------------------------ From: Rossi Kwan Date: Wed, 10 May 1995 13:04:25 +0800 (HKT) Subject: About 4X Mitsumi CD drive??
